How to Get There

This section can be reached by trail (continuation of the Primatas x Paineiras/Corcovado section westbound x eastbound (Barra de Guaratiba x Pão de Açúcar) following the yellow footprints/black base or by the trail coming from Parque Lage eastbound x westbound (Pão de Açúcar x Barra de Guaratiba), following the black footprints/yellow base). There is also the possibility of going by vehicle along the Estrada do Redentor starting at Jardim Botânico neighborhood or from Alto da Boa Vista to the old Paineiras hotel, now the Paineiras Visitor Center, or via Estrada das Paineiras coming from Cosme Velho neighborhood to Paineiras.

Starting eastbound x westbound, the most used route is the ascent through Parque Lage located at Rua Jardim Botânico nº 414. There are several bus lines coming from various neighborhoods of the city that pass by the Park's entrance. Taxis and other private vehicles also have easy access to the Park.

Route Description

(Direction West x East / Barra de Guaratiba x Morro da Urca)

For those starting this section coming from the Primatas waterfall, after the entrance to the Paineiras Visitor Center keeping on the main trail, ahead there will be a fork where you can choose to stay on the Main Trail towards Parque Lage or turn left onto the "trail arm" to Corcovado. It is always good to remember that the main trail will always be marked with the Transcarioca Trail footprints while the trail arms leading to the attractions have only wooden arrow signage indicating the attraction and its respective distance. We also have white arrows indicating the exit to the asphalt.

When leaving the main trail towards Corcovado, the hiker will have approximately (1.1 km) ahead with a crossing of the cog train track and subsequent arrival at the asphalt where the hiker should continue climbing about one thousand meters on the asphalt to the ticket office, where they must purchase their entrance ticket to Christ the Redeemer. Tickets must be paid in cash (they do not accept credit cards and there is no student discount). It is important to check the fees on the official website, as there is no specific pricing policy for hikers.

For those wishing to start this section from Parque Lage (direction East x West / Pão de Açúcar x Guaratiba), just follow the black footprints/yellow base from the Park's entrance gate. It will be just over three very pleasant kilometers of ascent. On the initial route, the hiker will find the old mansion, aquariums, grottos and leisure areas until reaching the trail entrance itself, where there is a control booth for the ascent, with free admission. From that point on, the trail becomes more pleasant amidst the Atlantic Forest, passing by small waterfalls, streams, ruins and unusual and frequent visits from capuchin monkeys or marmosets that live there. Further ahead, just after a small stone staircase, facing the waterfall, an ascent on a level curve will begin. When it ends, there is a steep stretch where a dozen metal steps assist the hiker, making the endeavor more exciting, yet safe. Right after this adventure, an entrance to the right to Corcovado will appear and then just follow the previous description above.

A great option is to return to the main trail, always following the black footprints on yellow base and visit the new Paineiras Visitor Center which has a large tourist structure geared towards ecotourism lovers. The visitor has the option to descend by road transport, railway or continue along the trail (Paineiras x Primatas section) where they can bathe in the excellent waters of the Primatas waterfall, about three kilometers / 1 hour walk along a great historical trail, shaded on a moderate descent.

Attractions

This section is characterized by the presence of the Christ the Redeemer statue, elected in 2007 one of the seven new wonders of the world, besides being the postcard of the Marvelous City. Along the way, it is possible to find several ruins of bridges and "pé de moleque" roads from the Empire era that are still well preserved, as well as waterfalls and streams. Parque Lage itself is already an important leisure area for Cariocas, whose headquarters (School of Visual Arts) has parking, a bistro, restrooms, picnic areas, aquariums and grottos for the delight of adults and children who use the park mainly on weekends.

Commerce/Lodging

Currently there is no partnership between the Transcarioca Trail and local businesses.

On this section it is possible to find restrooms, drinking water, transportation, snack bar and tourist information upon arrival at Corcovado. At the Parque Lage headquarters it is also possible to find restrooms and a bistro with quality food.

There are several water points for bathing and hydration along the trail.

Upon arrival at the Monument, there are bars and restaurants.

Historical Facts

The history of Parque Lage begins in 1811, when the area was the old Engenho de Açúcar Del Rei, on the shores of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. From then on, several owners left their mark on the property until it was acquired in 1859 by Antônio Martins Lage. At this time, it received the name "Parque dos Lage". Later, in 1900, it passed to his three children as inheritance.

In 1936, the wife of Henrique Lage founded the Sociedade do Teatro Lírico Brasileiro and, in 1948, new inhabitants came to the Lage mansion, Gabriela's great-nephews: Marina Colasanti and her brother Arduíno Colassanti. At that time, Gabriela Bezanzoni organized magnificent parties featuring the most prominent representatives of Rio society, such as the lyric singer Nanita Lutz.

On June 14, 1957, the Mansion was listed by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) as a historical and cultural heritage of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Subsequently, in 1975, the School of Visual Arts was created on site, managed by Oca Lage - a non-profit Social Organization. Since 2004, Parque Lage has been part of the Tijuca Forest National Park, under the administration of the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation.

The famous Christ the Redeemer statue has its image completely linked to the City of Rio de Janeiro. Located 709 meters above sea level, it was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and built in collaboration with French sculptor Paul Landowski and French engineer Albert Cagguot between 1922 and 1931. It was inaugurated on October 12, 1931.

The idea of building the monument dates back to 1920, having been proposed by the Catholic Circle of Rio de Janeiro. The group organized an event called "Monument Week" to attract donations and collect signatures to support the construction of the statue. Donations came mainly from Brazilian Catholics. Among several suggestions, the chosen one was the statue of Christ the Redeemer with open arms as a symbol of peace.
