12. Bom Retiro x Centro de Visitantes

Section: Bom Retiro x Centro de Visitantes

Park where this section is located: Tijuca National Park

Summary

Located in the heart of the park, the route crosses a series of hills, such as Archer Hill (named after Major Gomes Archer, who coordinated the reforestation work in the 19th century), Bico do Papagaio, Morro da Cocanha and Castelos da Taquara, with viewpoints, caves – such as Gruta do Navio and Gruta do Papagaio – and rivers. Over one of them, crossing is done by a suspension bridge, one of the main attractions of this section. Cross carefully and respect the safety rules. The effort to hike the steep trail leading to the top of Bico do Papagaio is rewarded by the beautiful landscape seen from its summit. Near the Visitor Center, follow the trail markings painted on the asphalt.

Historical Facts

In this section of the Transcarioca Trail we have the climb to Archer Hill, named after Major Gomes Archer, who in January 1862, sowed the first seedlings in the replanting of the Tijuca forest, leading the world's first experiment in human-led regeneration of a primary forest. He was the father of silviculture in Brazil.
